0516 - Slow day

I didn't do much yesterday. Since the meeting got called off, all I really had to do was get today's presentation turned in for copying. I did that, then went to a place in Brooklyn that bronxelf_ag001 had mentioned the day before, Junior's, for lunch. Matzoh ball soup and half a pastrami sandwich with an egg cream, not bad. The cheesecake was something else: Junior's is to cheesecake what Lindey's is to steak. Damn, that was great stuff. Rich, smooth, creamy, melt-in-your-mouth, and a slice twice as large as the usual restaurant cheesecake. It's a good thing I'd only had the half a sandwich, because I finished the cheesecake even though I felt stuffed by the end.

After that, I went back to SHARE to use the free high-speed wireless and talk to folks. I did attend one session, given by Sam Knutson of the CBT Tape mainframe software collection, and then out to dinner with him and a few others. Shelley's Steakhouse was good, with decent live jazz (that made conversation difficult at times)...but the steak was no better than Lindey's, and I expect to be blown away for $60.

I haven't seen the segment that aired on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night. Did anyone out there?

I'm debating wearing the TRON costume to give the talk this morning. Sam ran a bit of the first Kimmel appearance, and I got a round of applause for it. I think it'd go over pretty well. I'm not sure of the logistics, though: where would I change? I don't have a room at the conference hotel, after all.

So what does it taste like?

I'm curious. The closest I've come to finding out is reading Tom Waters's The Probability Pad, where he writes (as best as I can remember without digging up the book) "...I had an egg cream, a vile concoction so called because it contains neither egg nor cream."

Basically, it's a chocolate soda.

The way I describe it is that it's something like a root beer float that's gone to seed. Well, it tastes better than that. It's not an easy thing to describe.

Here's how to mix one. I have no idea about if the chocolate syrup requirement is as stated - and if so, how to get the one specified as it seems to be a regional brand.

(I have to disagree about it being like Yoohoo.)

The egg cream I had was unmixed. It was like a phosphate in that regard, with the degree of mixing left up to the drinker of it.

Oh for goodness sake, it doesn't matter what order you mix it in.

For goodness sake: go get some milk, syrup (We will all forgive you if you don't get Fox's u-Bet, though that really is preferable) and some seltzer and MAKE ONE. It's not like the ingredients are expensive. There's 46 "secret proportions". Here it is: Mess with the proportions til you're happy. The end.

Essentially it's a chocolate soda. The seltzer cuts down on both the sweetness and the cloying nature of the chocolate milk. They're very good with potato pancakes. (common combo when I was growing up.)

Done.

They make them in vanilla too, but frankly, I find vanilla egg creams to be a completely disgusting concept. Then again, I find basically vanilla anything to be a completely disgusting concept.

No no, it's not you. It's these stupid recipes acting like you're mixing volatile chemicals that have to be in exact proportion. It's *stupid*. I don't know anyone here who pays attention to that stuff. You just make it the way it tastes good.

I have *no way* of knowing what October looks like for school. So right now? Picking any weekend is essentially as good as any other.

Sheesh, and I thought martini drinkers were picky!

I now have a bottle of Fox's U-Bet in my suitcase. (Found at D'Agostino's on Lexington at 76th.)

Indeed not. For starters, Yoohoo isn't carbonated.
