1734 - A game for rennies

...that is, if you don't mind realism.

Cheapass Games has released their game Huzzah! as a series of 3 PDFs that can be printed out and used for free. It's a game where the players are performers at a faire, and they compete to be the one act invited back next year. The game board has neat stuff on it, and the rules are hilarious. The whole thing looks like it was developed by a guy who'd Been There and Done That.

If you actually want to play it, you'll need to figure out some way to make playing cards out of the supplied PDF, some colored pawns, some of two different colored counters (probably smaller than poker chips), and three 6-sided dice. Even if you don't, though, I recommend downloading the game and reading it for a giggle.

I'm not sure whether whoever created the game is making fun of the notion, common in some quarters, that the actual Renaissance is dull and boring, and that Renaissance fair audiences are ignorant and want to stay that way, or whether he/she/they believe(s) it.

I didn't get that idea...to me, it was more that the entertainment director wanted to emphasize accuracy over everything else, including humor, and what the performers want is to be funny at the possible expense of accuracy. I know it's possible to be both, but it's a lot harder than it looks.
