2003 - Sewing help needed

I need some help dealing with a problem with the TRON costume...

What do I do about the holes? As you can see, this unitard has seen a lot of service, and I should do something about the holes in the toes.

The lady at Renaissance Dancewear suggested I put moleskin inside the boat shoes' toes to prevent problems in the future. That sounds like a good idea, I think...but where do I find moleskin, and just what is it?

Any store that sells hiking boots and tents (BOTH, not either/or) will sell Moleskin. It's a stick-on padding about the thickness of chamois, and it's porous and stretchable so it moves and breathes with your foot and the shoe.

You might also try ankle socks under the unitard.

Sewing suggestion...

I'd suggest that you take an old pair of socks, cut out the front 1/2 of the foot, insert it inside the feet of the unitard, and tack it down along the cut, along the seamline that bisects the foot, and finally, around the current holes. The only hard part will be that due to the streching, you may want to do this by hand, and while it's on your foot. It's something I'd be comfortable doing, but I don't know how familiar you are with your needle to be running it that close to your body! *grin*

This will not only prevent future holes (or help to prevent them, but will also keep your toes from popping through the holes that have already been made.

Alternately, you could just (because this is a lycra material), just bring the sides of the holes back together, and stitch straight across them with a machine. You just might end up popping through again in the future at the same (or maybe even a different) spot.

Hope this helps!

Mole Skin... Dr. Scholl section of your drug store.

Make sure said socks are similar weight to unitard... probably dress socks.

NOW... for my addenda to ginafae's excellent instructions - which is exactly what I would have told you to had I been home to IM with you - (sorry, it was our Valentine's Night Out a day early...)

When you are getting the moleskin to go inside the shoe to prevent further trouble also pick up a bottle of clear nail polish.

Apply the nail polish around the hole in the toes of the unitard to prevent further growth. ALSO apply the nail polish around the socks where you cut them off to prevent runs and such... then proceed with ginafae's instructions. I do not recommend the sewing machine method for the reasons she states.

Sorry, I haven't been around this weekend, it's been uber busy... Monday morning is looking busy too... watch for me to be around in the afternoon or email me if you have more questions.

Additional thought... look in the ladies sock section of kmart or wally world... they are now selling a funky looking sock that is just the toe to be worn with clog like shoes... then you only need nail polish for the unitard... and the socks should be about the right weight witht he unitard... I would still stitch them in though to prevent slippage and for comfort...

Well... then when it comes to problem solving, we make a good pairing... because sometimes I don't "MacGuyver" enough!

Side note to Jay: Keep thy toe nails trimmed, that will also help with these sorts of things...

Good for you! Then you need moleskin inside the shoes for sure!

Yeah. Remember, they're canvas boat shoes, and the paint, if anything, stiffened them, so they're probably pretty abrasive inside.

I've got some moleskin; I'll put it in the shoes before Saturday.
