1009 - Minor pet peeve

Folks, when you want to link somewhere, please don't put the whole long URL in your text as text, as in:

<a href="http://web.site.example.com/long/URL/goes/here"> http://web.site.example.com/long/URL/goes/here </a> (without the spaces, of course)

If the URL is long enough, the browser can't break it to wrap the lines, and so your readers wind up having to scroll right and left for all of the entries on their friends page.

Go ahead and put the link in as a link from some meaningful, and wrappable, text. Someone who wants to use the link somewhere else can always use the "copy link to clipboard" function of their browser.

Thank you.

Update: It appears that LJ automagically makes anything that looks like a URL into a hyperlink. Grrrrrr. That means that folks usually don't repeat themselves, as above, but simply put URLs into their text. Bleagh. Put them in as links, please.

So you'd rather see My Homepage's Website than my actualy homepage url which is http://www.ai8w.dyndns.org/~ai8w/ ?

Not so hard to do.. I just don't see what the big deal is.

Yeah, that's it exactly. The difference isn't so great on short URLs like yours, but it is when someone posts a link deep into a site that's way too long to fit on one line.

Hrm...
Ok.. Well, I personally would suggest either increasing your monitor resolution or the size of your browser window.

Can't. My monitor's resolution is fixed, as it's a 15-inch iMac's LCD panel (1024x768), and the browser is as wide as I can make it and still get to a few things I need to get to on the screen when the browser window is open.

Decrease the text size? Point I'm trying to make is that if someone has a long URL, they'll either be polite about it and linkify it, or they won't. If they won't/dont linkify it, and you or I want to check it out, we have to bear the burden of doing so...

Of course, the only place I've seen where long links don't work is email and newsgroups. For some reason Firefox, Mozilla, and Netscape all seem to have handled long link problems nicely. No cutting and pasting..

Just my opinion.

The problem is apparent when I want to share something like the Blue Iguana restaurant's website and menu.

The full URL to the menu, outside of Anchor tags, is http://www.blueiguana.citysearch.com/contentbuilder/layout.php3?contentPath=content/00/01/34/42/45/userdirectory6.content

See, now, in Firefox I can just click on that long link, and it goes.. It doesn't look pretty, but then again, outside of Schlock Mercenary, what does? (Besides my girlfriend, that is!)

BTW, Enjoyed meeting you at Penguicon last year. I'm REALLY enjoying the comic! You were wrong, though, the early art wasn't all that bad at all!

I tend to use either way - but exercise good judgement. If I want to link to my website, it's:

http://www.betawriters.com

If it's a link to a book on Amazon, you better believe I put that in the a href form. It would just be cruel to put that out as a naked link.

People can always go here if they have unwieldly URLs!
