0835 - Canada's border guards demand guns

All we hear in the US from Canada is how the culture there is different and they don't really need guns. (The folks, mostly in the western provinces, who disagree are dismissed as throwbacks.)

CNN is running a different story now, though: Twice now, Canadian border guards have abandoned their posts when it was reported that armed criminals were headed for their crossings. They believe that they need to be armed in order to protect themselves and their citizens.

I heartily agree, and the only thing that surprises me is that they'd be out there unarmed in the first place.

Without the ability to project some sort of force, the border "guards" are little more than border "monitors." And if you're up against people who are carrying heavy weapons (which is what a vehicle really IS, especially when compared to a police baton), you need to be able to project force appropriate to counter.

Exactly. I meant to say something about how silly the entire concept of an unarmed "guard" is...

Rather says something about the state of that border that they're only demanding weapons /now/.

As borders go, it's pretty friendly.
