...Adaptec, who included this power cord with a USB 2.0 disk drive housing:



Why would they go to the expense of using a grounded plug when there is no conductor in the cord for the ground, let alone a pin at the other end to connect it to anything?

My hypothesis: they used to use a two-prong plug, but got just enough complaints from stupid people saying "But all my power sockets are three-prong! I can't use this!" that they felt it was worth the money to put that useless prong on there.

My guess is that they ran the numbers and putting 3 prong plugs on everything was cheaper than tracking inventory of 2 and 3 prong plugs.

Seconded. Volume pricing on 3-prong plugs vs. having to stock a separate item for the USB device.
