1737 - What's wrong with this picture?
I was reading the Minneapolis Star-Tribune web site with PithHelmet disabled (because no new version is yet available for Safari 3.1), and suddenly my window went away and I got a dialog box. I don't remember what it said, but when I clicked on OK, I got redirected to:
this page.

Now, what's wrong with this picture?
xponlinescanner.com has the honor of being the very first domain I'll drop into my local DNS caching server and pointed to 127.0.0.1 (which, for those of you who aren't computer geeks, effectively turns it off). In general, I don't do that, but these folks have earned being an exception.

Comments:
I wish those bastards at xponlinescanner were shut down and their asses tossed in jail for years..
I had a friend who got a similar screen and thought it was real and downloaded that damn XP scanner program. It was malware and took me 4 hours to remove.
That is hilarious. Well, and sad too. It implies that is has actually scanned and checked your machine. Yikes. Plus, just seeing the little apple up there makes it all the more absurd ;)
Heh. For those on windows, start, search, all files and folders, "HOSTS".. (it'll come up in some ../../etc/HOSTS path ish thing)
edit the file with wordpad and add that domain with the IP address 127.0.0.1 thus:
127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.0.1 *.xponlinescanner.com
Save the file (overwrite the old one) and you're golden.
The hosts file is in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
I want to get rid of xponlinescanner from my PC. I followed the instructions that you gave and and saving it. But I found another one through search. 1-st C:\I386\HOSTS - this one I edited 2-nd C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ets\hosts-what do I need to do with this one ?
After editing and saving the first one I was stil getting pop ups with allerts from that programm because it was on my start up toolbar. Then I deleted it from the "Start" window and from recycle bin.
WHat do I do with the 2-nd one and what else would you recommend?
Thanks,
