1203 - Pleasant literary surprise

Of all of the SF short stories I've read, my favorite, hands down, is H. Beam Piper's Lone Star Planet. I've had a much-read paperback copy for a long while now. It's out of print, unfortunately.

I was curious to see if anyone'd reprinted it, so I went Googling. I was more than a little surprised to find that it had been transcribed for the web by Project Gutenberg; apparently its copyright expired and was not renewed. You can read it here, in any of several forms.

I really like Piper's New Texas. If it existed, I'd move there immediately, at any cost.

location: 56031, unfortunately

TBH I think I'd find myself quite at home in New Texas.

Did you ever read The Ayes of Texas? A bit outdated as scifi goes, but still a good story.

Yes, and the other two books in the series, too. A pretty good read.

I still get a giggle out of the idea of drilling a tunnel all the way to Moscow then lighting the place up from the underside!
