Pins and needles

I've been expecting to make a return trip to the Dominican Republic this week ever since I got back. There have been some technical hurdles, and some political hurdles, but we've finally cleared them all. I'm now waiting on final confirmation from the customer that they'll be expecting me on Thursday, before I buy the trip package. Right now, the trip that's being offered as a package on Expedia looks good, and if it's still available when I get confirmation, I'll buy it. If not, the cost goes way up: the package price is lower than the price of just the plane ticket by about $150, and that's including three nights in the same nice four-star hotel I was in last time.

The prospects for making the sale look good, and if it goes, not only am I in for a nice bonus, but it will help the company strategically in more than one way.

Now, if I'd just get an answer from the customer...

Miscellanea

1) Just got in another XM receiver, this time for the house. At a price of $29.95 after rebate, I couldn't pass it up. It's waiting to receive the activation signal now. I do have to do something different for permanent mounting of the antenna, but that will have to wait till after I get back from the Dominican Republic (assuming I go, which still isn't confirmed yet). Right now, it's sitting on the front porch, with the cable dangling out the front office window.

2) One guy commented in the alt.books.tom-clancy newsgroup that the French should quit complaining about 400 Americans killed in Iraq, since they had 12,000 people die needlessly from heat last summer. Clancy's reply:

"Once on Hill Street Blues Belcher is concerned that his mom is suffering from the heat. A hood tells him to tell her just to sit in the bath tub with tepid water and shazaam, the problem goes away.

Can the French be so averse to a bath tub as this?"

It's confirmed...

...I'm going to Santo Domingo tomorrow. I wasn't sure for a while: I got approval late in the day, and then I had trouble buying the package from expedia.com. (What idiot schedules a system upgrade for 2:30 PM Central on a Tuesday??!) That's all behind me, and now all I have to do is go to the airport tomorrow.

The itinerary is more sensible than last time: the connection is in one airport in Miami, and the flight out leaves at 11:10 AM. I'm going to leave way early tomorrow morning, anyway, because I have to go to the office and pick up the demo system before going to the airport, and I want to get there early enough to try to get a window seat. I hate middle seats.

I'm not as rushed this time, since I don't have to drive up to the Cities tonight...
