It's up, as much as it'll get for a while

As I noted in a previous comment, I stayed up till 1:30 this morning getting the new machine set up so it could transfer about 38 GB of data from the iMac over Firewire. Neat stuff. Unfortunately, in the process, the Cinema Display took a fall, and now has a big ding in the right-hand side, and the bezel is pushed out a bit. Argh. I just hope that, should it develop problems down the road, Apple doesn't decide that that means it's not covered under AppleCare any more. It's working perfectly now.

I found out that Apple doesn't install the development tools or X11 by default, so I put those on. I had to edit a couple of preference files to work around bugs, and there's still one major piece missing that I can't do much about (but that only affects me and a small number of other folks).

Having lots of screen real estate is a nice thing. I went from 1024x768 to 1680x1050, so now I can put lots more stuff on the screen. I'm still getting used to that.

The machine is also a LOT faster. The only real measurement I can make is emulation speed under Hercules; peak speed went from 16.7 to 31.75 MIPS on one test I run. It definitely feels a lot snappier. I don't spend much time looking at the spinning beach ball of death. I've ordered 2 GB more memory (guaranteed compatible, lifetime warranty, $209 with overnight shipping), which will take the machine to 2.5 total. I'll have to really overload it to get it to swap.

Whee. Think I'll keep it.

Another antigunner refuses to let the facts get in the way

A Star Tribune NetLet (the first one in the column) asks if undercover cops get shot while armed, what makes conceal carry proponents think they'll do any better?

She must not have read the story in that very newspaper just three days previously, detailing how undercover cops usually work without guns and body armor. Typical behavior for antigunners: they don't let mere facts get in the way of their hatred of guns and those who believe the average law-abiding citizen has a right to own, carry, and use them.
