1004 - Not everything has to be political!

mouseworks comments in a recent LJ entry that art should be basically subversive. She goes on to point out that she doesn't listen to country music except when she's at home in rural Virginia because it's "out of context when taken from its community".

To all of this, I am forced to ask: Why must everything be political? Why can't things just be fun - yes, even High Art? The world doesn't revolve around politics, and especially not subversive politics.

Then again, maybe people aren't patronizing High Art precisely because it thinks it has to be subversive, and they don't want subversive. I sure as hell don't.

I agree, I've had arguments with some arts students/professors about this. Art is one of the few things I agree with Kant about. It should be about the sublime, not axe-grinding.
