0834 - Is Obama eligible to become President of the United States?

A long-time Democrat who's served as chairman of his county party and ran for office as a Democrat has filed a lawsuit in Philadelphia claiming he's not. He may or may not be right. Obama's reaction to this is suspicious, however: If the lawsuit is all wet, all Obama has to do is prove he's a natural-born citizen of the US. This is simply done by producing a birth certificate to the court.

He's refused to do so.

What is Obama hiding?

Yes, I know he's posted images of his birth certificate to his website, and factcheck.org has posted one as well. There's only one problem: they're different. (Something else I wasn't aware of: factcheck.org is owned and run by the same Chicago organization that Obama served as a director for years. Can you say "conflict of interest"?)

Squelching this one would be ridiculously simple. Why is Obama refusing to do so?

Watch the video for yourself and see what you think.

whois says that factcheck.org is owned by the University of Pennsylvania.

If I were to get my birth certificate now, it would not match the one I already have (which is the original my mother got at my birth). Would that prove I wasn't born?

Maybe Obama thinks that tactically it makes more sense to let this proceed in order to stamp it down hard later. Or maybe he just doesn't want to interrupt his campaign right now.

Maybe he's too busy laughing at the absurdity of it all.

Reading the lawsuit, I couldn't help but wonder if it's all an elaborate joke. I mean, this can't be serious, can it?

FactCheck.org and the “Annenberg Challenge”

Contrary to suggestions we've seen in some conservative blogs, there is no connection between the Chicago Annenberg Challenge and FactCheck.org, save for the fact that both received funding from the Annenberg Foundation. The foundation supports a wide variety of charitable causes – a total of 5,200 grants during its first 15 years of operation. It was founded in 1989 by Walter H. Annenberg, a newspaper and magazine publisher who died in 2002.

oh, and not to mention,

"For the record, the Annenberg Foundation's president and chairman is Leonore Annenberg, the founder's widow. Public records show she's given $2,300 to the McCain campaign, which announced on Oct. 8, that she has endorsed him for president."

Lawmakers and judges are doing a great job of ignoring the constitution anyway.....why should they start caring about it now?

You can give it to Obama now, or to the government after he's elected...it's not like they're going to let you keep your own money anyway.

Best part of this case....

(Link)
"Obama's birth is reported as occurring at two (2) separate hospitals, Kapiolani Hospital and Queens Hospital. Wikipedia English Version, under the subject "Barack Obama," states Obama was born at Kapiolani Hospital. Wikipedia Italian Version, under the subject "Queens Hospital," states Barack Obama was born in Queens Hospital."

Well that proves it!

FactCheck Ownership.... Conflict of Interest?

(Link)
First, I'd state that if you don't see a problem with Rick Davis's connection to Fannie Mae, then you essentially forfeit your rights to complain about this one. As this one is *vastly* more disparate and unconnected.

The Annenberg Challenge was a $500m grant program, to improve public schools, started by Walter Annenberg. The Chicago Annenberg Challenge on which Obama served was one of the successful attempts to qualify for that grant money. It no longer exists.

FactCheck is owned by The Annenberg Public Policy Center. It was also funded partially by Walter Annenberg.

Walter Annenberg also contributed $5,000,000 to the Nixon Library, has generously supported initiatives put forth by Reagan, Ford and even Eisenhower. This on top of other efforts often related to education, and health care.

Annenberg was a fervent Republican. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Reagan.

And now you're claiming that he setup organizations specifically to support Democrats with lies.

Well Sir... I could be wrong, but the odds seem to favor that you are incorrect, and you're falsely defaming an incredibly good man, based on spurious logic (at best).

Grow up.

Obama is not "an incredibly good man". He's a cynical opportunist who cozies up to people when they can give him an advantage and drops them like the proverbial hot potato when they becom eliabilities. He's a left-wing politician who's only interested in raising taxes so he can buy votes with redistributed wealth taken at gunpoint. He's worked for an organization that's responsible for the current economic crisis in no small part and is blatantly trying to fill the voter registratio rolls with fraudulent registrations everywhere they've been invesitgated. He's the most liberal, and the most anti-gun, politician ever nominated to the presidency.

In short, he's a politician trying to get elected. At this writing, he appears to be succeeding. I only hope we only have to put up with his leftism for 4 years, and the leftist control of both houses of Congress for two. Still, I expect that their actions will deepen and prolong the current economic crisis, just as FDR's actions prolonged the Great Depression for 7 years. I'll be mildly surprised if I still have a job a year from now, as I expect the Left's policies to destroy the economy.

Ah... You realized, do you not, that if either of them has more of a question about whether they're eligible, actually it's John McCain, since he technically wasn't even born in the U.S?

I realize that you don't want Obama to be the president... I get that. And it's not even that you don't have other 'valid' (though I disagree with them) reasons for that.

But, is this *really* one of them? Honestly, I really don't believe that you *actually* believe this is true and important (and certainly not while simultaneously ignoring McCain's even more questionable status in this regard). I gotta say, it seems more that you just desperately *want* there to be some sort of scandal, not that you could honestly believe that there *is* one. :-/

This. This. This.

And I'm not even a particularly big Obama fan. But if anyone genuinely *should* be disqualified on this basis it is not Obama- it's McCain and clearly so.

"Squelching this one would be ridiculously simple. Why is Obama refusing to do so?"

I wouldn't expect any politician to try to defend themselves against everything that they're accused of being/doing/whatever. It's a simple matter of time and urgency. If this isn't a big deal, he isn't going to deal with it. If it is a big deal, others are going to pick up the torch.

If a man is right, should he *have* to verbally defend himself when accused?

John McCain did, promptly and completely. I'd say a serious question about eligibility for the office one is seeking would qualify as something that needed an immediate response, if only because leaving it unanswered would detract from the message one is trying to get across. ...Then again, that assumes that the press is doing its job, something that is noticeable by its utter absence in this campaign.

What I think that this law suit is a joke of delusional man who wants to find something that isn't there. I think you are being taken for a ride.

The always trustworthy http://www.politifact.com did their own report on
this months ago:

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2008/jun/13/obamas-birth-certificate/
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2008/jun/27/obamas-birth-certificate-part-ii/

(I would add in June two months before this supposed suit was filed)

There findings were that there was more of a case against John McCain: http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2008/may/12/born-usa/

but even that is ridiculously tenuous. Just because he was born in Panama on Panamanian land, possibly, does not make him a non-citizen.

This is simply done by producing a birth certificate to the court.

It is never that simple when it comes to the courts and issues of citizen ship. That would again give a stupid idea some semblance of credence. Why waste his time. There is nothing to hide here but who wants to have their citizenship tested in court and have that plastered all over the television. As it stands now the thing is a stupid rumor on the internet for the random conspiracy nutbar and anti-Obama fanatic to wank to. The second Obama sends a record to that court house it becomes an actual story. So why bother with something that is patently false, a waste of time, and would just cause more trouble dealing with. Obama released his records. They're out there what more could you expect from him? Yes they're are the asinine rumors but as the politifact links above state they're just that silly rumors with no bareing on reality.

*shrug* Okkay, so he shot it down. See how easy it was? Why didn't he do it sooner? Stonewalling made it look like he had something to hide.
