0925 - Pleasant surprise from Northwest

I got a package in the mail yesterday from Northwest Airlines. I've been a Platinum Elite frequent flyer with them the past couple of years, but last year I didn't fly enough with them to keep the status - or so I thought. At the beginning of the year, I looked up my WorldPerks account, and saw that my Platinum status had been renewed again. I thought it was a mistake, but I wasn't going to argue.

No mistake. The letter in the package begins, "Even though you didn't fly with us enough to reach our published requirements, your frequent travel with us makes you one of our best customers, so we're pleased to extend your Platinum Elite status for another year."

I'm not going to argue. At that level, there are enough benefits to make keeping it worthwhile. It's especially easy to get used to getting upgraded to first class whenever I travel; I think I only flew three or so legs last year in coach on Northwest aircraft that had a first class section.

Maybe I'll fly enough this year to keep the status honestly; if not, I kinda doubt they'll do it again.

The fact that I haven't been on an airplane since January, 1980 (but frequently before then, starting from the age of one week) might be why, once again, I never get such letters from the airlines.. :)

(This isn't because I am afraid of flying or anything, it's just a combination of not enough money for it and no occasion to (plus road trips are cool!)
