0834 - Another gratuitous leftist shot

According to the New York Post's Liz Smith, while accepting an award from the National Board of Review, actor George Clooney wisecracked "Charlton Heston announced again today that he's suffering from Alzheimer's."

When asked about the statement, Clooney told Smith "I don't care. Charlton Heston is the head of the National Rifle Association. He deserves whatever anyone says about him."

This is contemptible. Whatever you may think of Heston's politics, cheap shots like that are beyond the pale. Of course, I'm not surprised; leftists love to demonize the NRA, after all.

A cheap shot indeed. Charlton Heston is one of the elder statesmen of Hollywood, and an icon of 20th century cinema. Regardless of politics, respect is something we can all show for those who have enriched us with their lifetime's work.

I don't know what the world is coming to when society begins to consider it 'all right' to vilify someone for their justly held beliefs, let alone use somebody's illness to press home their supposedly humorous point.

Cheap shots are cheap shots, and it doesn't really matter whether they're taken by people on the left or right (which people on both sides seem to do too often), they're equally cheap. It's usually a disservice to a political movement to make statements like this, since it just makes your own side look bad based on the wisecracking mouth of whoever said it.

By the way, the incident you're describing I first read about a couple months ago. It was kind of a big thing for a few days, but I thought the uproar had faded already...
